During The Massage Session

Probably most of us have experienced a massage session, which has made us feel great and fulfilled our expectations completely. What actually makes the experience so special? Massage therapist and his professional skills are undoubtedly very important. Another factor, which contributes to overall quality of treatment are manual skills of the therapist, and his approach to the client. I would like to post some tips, which may prove really helpful for massage professionals and for the clients as well. If you would like to share your thoughts and suggestions, you are welcome to join the discussion.

During The Massage Session

  • Start the massage session by touching your client through the sheet or towel, next apply some massaging oil.

  • Never comment on the client’s body or tattoos.
  • Do not massage the same area for too long.
  • Avoid any sudden or to forceful movements as your client may be afraid of an injury.
  • Never massage against the blood flow.
  • Put more pressure if you are massaging an overweight client, but make sure you are not hurting them.
  • Releasing emotions may cause different reactions, i.e. cry, shivers, yawning, or screaming.
  • During the massage session, inform your client that you are going to move on to more sensitive parts of the body, i.e. face, front of the neck, chest, belly or inside tight.
  • If you cannot cope with discomfort of hairy clients, massage them with the direction the hair grows.
  • Inform your client 5 minutes earlier that the massage session is about to end. Ask them if there were any areas they would like you to concentrate on.

  • Repeat the same massage technique at least three times, do not change it constantly.
  • Make sure your hands follow the body curves; always use both hand for your work.
  • Talk to your client if they are willing to talk, never initiate the conversation.
  • Beware of the client’s breathing pattern, they will keep their breath if you put too much pressure.
  • Be careful when using your elbows or knees.
  • If the massage session is overrunning, always inform your client, but never charge them for extra time, unless they ask you to extend the session themselves.
  • Never discuss other clients.
  • Never chew gum in a presence of your client.
  • Do not diagnose.
  • Never cause pain.
  • Do not breathe at your client.
